Sociology: or, The Reconstruction of Society, Government, and Property, upon the principles of the equality, the perpetuity, and the individuality of the private ownership of life, person, government, homestead and the whole product of labor, by organizing all nations into townships of self-governed homestead democracies--self-employed in farming and mechanism, giving all the liberty and happiness to be found on earth
New York: Published by the Author, 1877. First Edition. Proto-anarchist publication comprised of several separately-paginated appendices, including the first (of a proposed six) books of "The Sataniad, or Contest of the Gods, for the Dominion in Heaven and Earth," a long and outspoken poem on the Old and New Testaments; and "A New Phonotyphic Pronouncing, and Defining Dictionary of the English Language," a short introduction to phonotypic reform with the proposal of a universal alphabet and language, including the first two pages of a dictionary. The last few pages of this section include an "Analysis of Vowels and Consonants," written in double columns in English and Masquerier's reformed language. Masquerier began his career in his native Kentucky as a printer and lawyer before moving east where he promoted the communistic vision of Robert Owen, applying in 1842 to join the "Communist Society" sponsored by the British utopian Goodwyn Barmby, and finally joining radical publisher George Henry Evans's National Reform Association. Among Masquerier's many radical schemes, most of which are delineated in the present work, was a proposal he made to the architect of Central Park Frederick Law Olmstead to convert 80 acres of land just outside New York into a self-sustaining community powered by windmills. EGBERT II, pp. 353 & 408. References: Peter Adams. The Bowery Boys: Street Corner Radicals and the Politics of Rebellion (2005), pp. 85-87. Mark A. Lause. Young America: Land, Labor, and the Republican Community (2010), pp. 17-19. Octavo (20.25cm.); original green blind-embossed cloth, gilt-lettered spine, brown glazed endpapers; mixed paginations; engraved portrait frontispiece. Corners gently bumped, light shelf wear and few tiny spots to cloth, else a Very Good or better, superlative copy.
