A colour lithographic poster, reference P.W.8, [1946], printed by Stafford & Co, London, double royal (40" x 25"), laid down on light card, presented in a seemly modern frame. In very good condition, the image bright and sharp, some folds & closed tears evident on close examination! Frank Sherwin was born in 1896 in Derby and trained first at the Derby School of Art and then the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. He was well known for his railway posters and between 1937 and 1966 he designed around 40 posters for the Big Four railway companies and British Railways. He died in Cookham in Berkshire in 1986 where he had lived for over 45 years. This poster is from a series of three posters designed by Sherwin for the GWR, the other two being Devon (P.W.9) and Somerset (P.W.10). After the war the GWR gave their posters post-war (P.W.) references starting with P.W.1 (Newquay by Alker Trip) and finishing with P.W.33 (Paignton by Relf), just prior to nationalisation at the end of 1947
