Essai Sur L'Origine de la Gravure
Paris - F.Schoell, 1808 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. A scarce first French edition of this influential work on typography. With fold-out and double-page plates, including one hand-coloured, collated: complete with twenty folding plates numbers 1-9, 9bis, 10-19. Detailingthe history of wood engraving, and on the printing of the fifteenth and sixteenth centiries, the origins of cards and maps, calligraphy, ancient manuscripts and watermarks, the volume is a groundbreaking early example of bibliographic books and is considered one of the earliest and most important works of its kind. A fascinting and detailed volume, made all the more so by its superb collection of plates. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973), a noted book collector and diarist. Condition: Rebound in quarter-morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally smart, there is some wear to the joints, extremities and backstrips. Internally, the pages are firmly bound, but are somewhat age-toned, with some instances of spotting, irregular cutting and discolouration and chipping to the extremities. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..
