Little Women (2 Vols.)
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1869. Cloth. Very Good +. May Alcott. A handsome example of the 1869 1st edition, in two parts. The first part (or volume) is the 1869 2nd state of the 1st edition, with no "Part First" printed on the spine but with 1869 (instead of 1868) on the title and copyright pages. The second part (or volume) is the correct 1st edition, 1st issue, with 4 full-page illustrations and 8 pgs. of advertisements at the rear. The 2 volume set has held up nicely. Solid and VG+ in its original, unsophisiticated maroon cloth, with bright, unflecked gilt-lettering at the front panels and spines. A bit of spotting --and scuffing-- to the panels, very slight lean to the bindings. Tender (but still perfectly solid) front inner hinge of part one, former owner name ("Louisa M. Smith") in light pencil and in ink at the first blank endpapers. 16mos, 700 pgs. all told plus publisher's ads. Nicely illustrated thruout by May Alcott, Louis May's youngest sister.
