Duchess Laura, Certain Days of Her Life
Ward Lock, London 1929 - 8vo. 351pp. Publisher's blue cloth titled and decorated in black to spine and front board. Minor edgewear and scuffing, small dent or nick to fore-edge of rear board otherwise a very good copy indeed, in a very nice example of the unclipped cream dustjacket, light scuffing and soiling here and there but really very handsome. Inscribed by the author to the front flyleaf (with "kindest remembering") to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Winchester and with a laid in ALS to the same discussing a meeting. Rather a romp of a novel with a multiplicity of story lines involving the same rather aristocratic family and their adventures involving gold-digging actresses after the eldest son, nefarious criminal types seducing the daughter (it all turns out fine with the appearance of a poverty stricken Indian Army Officer), and a female master criminal seeking to make off with the famed Catherine Ruby.all of which probably makes for hectic get-togethers. Not by any means a common book anyway, this frothily criminous novel is made all the more interesting by the association, Clarence Winchester was Assistant Chief Editor at Cassell's and was at various times involved with The Argosy, The Storyteller and the epic "Railway Wonders of The World." Mrs. Belloc Lowndes is somewhat less famous than she used to be, which is a shame considering her considerable influence and massive output; sister of Hilaire Belloc and daughter of noted English feminist Bessie Parkes she wrote a tremendous number of novels, short stories and articles (some of which are bound to have ended up in Mr. Winshester's periodicals) and is perhaps best known for her novel "The Lodger"; an early fictionalised version of the Jack the Ripper murders which has been filmed and adapted numerous times but is perhaps most importantly the first film of Alfred Hitchcock. nov [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
