War and Peace.
London: Walter Scott,, [1889]. 4 volumes, octavo. Original blue diaper cloth, titles to spines gilt, titles and Romanov eagle to front boards gilt. Ownership signature to front pastedowns, annotation to front free endpaper of vol. I. Some marks to covers, minor foxing to endleaves and edges, vol. IV front hinge partly cracked but holding, text block sound. An excellent set. First complete translation into English from the Russian, the work of the American editor and translator Nathan Haskell Dole (1852?1935). This English issue omits the preface to the American edition but retains Dole's editorial footnotes. Walter Scott reissued the work in two volumes in 1897. The English translation was preceded by Vizetelly's truncated version and by Clara Bell's translation from the French, both 1886. Dole was the editor of Tolstoy's Collected Works (20 volumes, 1899).
