New York, NY: Harper and Brothers, 1876.. FIRST U.S. EDITION, being the FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, also first single volume edition. Published the same year as the UK triple-decker. Publisher's blind-stamped lilac cloth, with decorative gilt titles to spine, peach-coloured coated endpapers. Bookplate of Oelrichs to pastedown, bumped to upper corner, sunned as expected, slight wear to spine ends; a fine copy, housed in a custom-made slip-case. A Haycraft/Queen Cornerstone, T. S. Eliot called this book the first and best modern detective story.
