The history of the bucaniers of America
London: Printed for T. Evans, near York-Buildings; and W. Otridge, opposite the New Church in the Strand 12mo (17.3 cm; 6.875"). 2 vols. I: [4], 318 pp. II: [2], 360, [12] pp.. 1774 Influential and very readable English translation of De Americaanse zeerovers, here in the fifth edition. As noted on the title-page, the work contains "I. The exploits and adventures of Le Grand, Lolonois, Roche Brasiliano, Bat the Portuguese, Sir H. Morgan, &c. II. The dangerous voyage and bold attempts of Capt. Sharp, Watlin, Sawkins, Coxon, and others, in the South Sea. III. A journal of a voyage into the South Sea by the Free-booters of America, from 1684 to 1689. IV. A relation of a voyage of the Sieur de Montauban, captain of the free-booters, in Guinea, in the year 1695." Exquemeling served some 20 years as a barber-surgeon among the pirates until 1674. He has much to say about the social and political situation in Mexico, Central America (especially Panama), and the Caribbean islands, with considerable attention being paid to the situation of slaves and free blacks as well as the Native American populations. This work was first published in 1678 in Dutch and later translated, with varying degrees of accuracy, into Spanish, French, and English. Of this edition Sabin writes: "This second fifth edition is that of 1771 with a new date." Provenance: Signature of G.W. Phipps on title-page of each volume. Recent quarter calf over marbled paper–covered boards and spine with raised bands, black leather labels, and gilt decorations/lettering, edges a faded speckled red; glue action on first and last few leaves from a previous binding. Signatures as above, some dog-ears, a few small spots; one very short marginal tear, another margin lacking some paper, light age-toning. => An engaging history of piracy in a neat, sound pair of books.
