Escritos maritimos e academicos a bem do progresso dos conhecimentos uteis, e mormente da nossa marinha, industria e agricultura .
Lisbon, Impressão Regia, 1828. - 4°, modern full calf, spine gilt (slightly rubbed). Some marginal dampstaining to first few leaves; occasional light soiling. Overall in very good condition. viii pp., (4 ll.), 15, (1 blank), 26, 24, 38, 22, 22, 6, 8, 19, (1 blank), 16 pp. [with 6 pp. of tables]. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this valuable compendium of information on Portuguese and Brazilian trade and naval education. Collected here are 19 short works by Dantas Pereira, printed in 12 separately paginated units (each with its own drop-title and imprint) with preliminaries. The first five pieces are orations delivered before the Academia da Companhia dos Guarda-Marinhas, in which Dantas Pereira recounts in detail its history and curriculum (including a four-page list of its scientific apparatus). The next five pieces concern Brazil and Rio de Janeiro. They include a proposal for establishing a naval academy in Rio, with Dantas Pereira's proposed curriculum and plan for preparing the 27 textbooks required; a proposal for the defense of Rio, detailing the preferred strategies, manpower needed, and estimated cost; and a valuable six-page table tallying, by size, the 1,384 ships stopping in Rio during 1816 to load or unload cargo, along with the numbers of ships sailing between Rio and each of 131 world ports and the types of goods carried. The remaining miscellaneous pieces include a eulogy of D. João VI, a proposal for reforming Portuguese agriculture, and a report on activities of the Academia Real das Sciencias for 1827. Despite the similar title, this work is not the same as his @Escritos maritimos (Lisbon, 1816).Dantas Pereira (1772-1836), a native of Alemquer, entered the navy at age 14 and four years later was already Professor of Mathematics at the Academia da Companhia dos Guarda-Marinhas. Around 1807 he went to Brazil, where he served as Chefe de Esquadra, and upon his return to Lisbon in 1819 was named royal councillor. From 1820 to 1823 he was Conselheiro d'Estado, but having accepted important offices under D. Miguel, was forced to flee to France in 1834, where he died. Dantas Pereira was a member of the American Philosophical Society and was secretary of the Academia Real das Sciencias from 1823 to 1833. A prolific writer, he published mathematical texts, poetry, plays, and political commentary on the revolution of 1820, in addition to many short works on naval science.*** Innocêncio V, 31-32: with incorrect collation. Martins de Carvalho, @Dicionário bibliográfico militar português I, 88: collating as our copy. Not in Borba de Moraes (1983), Bosch or Rodrigues, which lists (nº 812) Dantas Pereira's @Escritos maritimos (Lisbon, 1816)-a different work. Not in JCB, @Portuguese and Brazilian Books. NUC: PPAmP.
