In Evil Hour
London: Jonathan Cape, 1980. Hardcover. Very good/Fine. Octavo (20 cm), pp. [6], 183, [3]. Signed by author on half title page, "Par Teó, good [with Evil in title circled]. Gabriel / 92." First British edition. Blue cloth with gilt spine titling, pictorial jacket, and red publisher's ink on top edge. Boards have very light edge wear, with light foxing on fore-edge of text block. Originally titled "Esta Pueblo de Mierda," Garcia Marquez disavowed the first edition as published in 1962 stripped of its colloquialisms and with South American-style "ustedes" replaced throughout with the Spanish "vosotros." He re-wrote the work, which won the prestigios Esso Prize in Columbia. (Phillip Swanson, "The Cambridge Companion to Gabriel Garcia Marquez," pp. 13, 41.)
