Quarto, contemporary full red straight-grain morocco gilt, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, all edges gilt. $4200.First edition of James Fittler's two-volume "Cabinet Bible," beautifully illustrated with 75 engraved plates after Durer, Rembrandt, Rubens, Vandyck, Correggio, Poussin, and other Old Masters, as well as engraved title pages. Very handsomely bound in full contemporary straight-grain morocco-gilt.This "Cabinet Bible" was the first to feature engraved plates by James Fittler, the distinguished 18th-century artist, an associate of the Royal Academy and marine engraver to George III; with letterpress by Thomas Bensley. Of the engraved plates, 45 are full-page illustrations, 30 are vignette section titles. With the famous misprint "Let the children first be killed" (instead of "filled") at Mark vii, 27. Darlow & Moule 961. Herbert 1394. Early owner signatures.Infrequent faint foxing to the margins of a few plates, text generally quite clean and fresh.
