The Ancient Art Stoneware of the Low Countries and Germany, or "Grès de Flandres" & "Steinzeug", Vols. I & II Complete
London, England: Privately Printed, 1892. "Its Principal Varieties, and the Places where it was Manufactured during the XVIth and XVIIth Centuries." Signed by the author in a neat ink hand on the colophon page. Copy no. 89 of a limited edition of 270 copies on Dutch handmade paper. An additional XXX copies were issued on Japan paper. Privately printed by the Chiswick Press in collaboration with C. Whittingham and Co. With copperplate etchings produced by T. Brooker & Co., London, apparently using the chine-collé process, to allow the printmaker to pull finer details off the plate and to provide a background color behind the image that is different from the surrounding backing sheet. First and presumed only printing of this book. Principal text in English. 15.5 x 11.5 inches. Original paper wrappers and European-style over-wrappers, as issued, not a later rebinding. With title page reproduced on the front of the over-wrappers. The over-wrappers are somewhat age-darkened, especially along the spines, and there is some splattering to the front over-wrapper of Vol. l. Text blocks with generally unbumped spine heads and tails, and bindings with moderately bumped corners. Off-setting to the front and rear FEPs from the over-wrappers. With gently deckled fore and bottom page edges to a handsome effect. With 208 and 183 umbered pages. Illustrated with 15 copperplate etchings and with 210 B&W illustrations in text. All etchings and illustrations are by the author. Also with charming headbands and decorated initials. A few of the etchings with tiny, light spots to the outer margins, quite minor. Several text pages with light spotting or off-setting. Else the book is impressively clean. With many pages unopened, hence largely unread. A Very Good copy in Very Good Minus over-wrappers. Very scarce in any condition. A valuable reference work for collectors and dealers of ceramics and stoneware from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Extensive commentary, information, and examples are given for each geographic region discussed. Marc-Louis Solon [1835-1913] was a French-born pottery artist and expert.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Illus. by Solon, Marc-Louis. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Limited Edition.
