The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments: together with the Apocrypha: translated out of the original tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by the special command of King James I, of England.
United States of America. Printed in Worcester, Massachusetts: by Isaiah Thomas 8vo (20.5 cm;8.125"). 735, [1] pp., [88] ff., [736]?959 pp.. 1793 Early American Bible from the press of the printer whom Ben Franklin called the "Baskerville of America." The double-columned text separated by rules has been "carefully copied from the Folio and Quarto editions" of 1791, which were praised for their quality workmanship upon publication. This more portable yet still typographically pleasing text has a line in Hebrew from Genesis on the Old Testament sectional title-page and two lines in Greek on that for the New Testament, the types further showcasing Thomas' typographic prowess; the O.T. title-page touts the presence of the Apocrypha, as is not always seen. Provenance: Susannah Abbot has calligraphically added her name and the date 1820 inside the printed floral wreath ornament surrounding the words "The Property of" before the start of the Old Testament. Later in the Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Contemporary panelled calf, rubbed with spine creases from frequent use, back fly-leaf loosely attached. Ex-library with paper shelf label, bookplate, pencilling, and circulation materials; old rubber-stamps to fly-leaf, title-page and verso, and one leaf of text. Provenance marking as above and signature clipped from front fly-leaf; one text leaf with bottom line on each side trimmed wholly or partly away and a few more missing catchwords or with partially trimmed headlines; light to moderate foxing and age-toning and a little spotting throughout. => An important Americanum in good, pleasing condition with a nice provenance.
