The Evil Eye or The Black Spectre
James Duffy, UK 1860 - 1st Edition 1860. The Evil Eye is based on Irish legend: that some people can cause harm merely by looking at something. It is assumed to be held harmless by the possessor unless selfish design or desire for vengeance brings it out. It was inspired by a neighbour named Case, who claimed an enemy had killed three of his cows merely by overlooking them. The Lindsays and the Goodwins are neighbors, and have lived for many years in mutual harmony and esteem. Unfortunately, things are about to change, due to a well-intentioned act of one family towards a member of the other. With twelve of the thirteen plates present. Bound in the original red cloth which has been recased with the original spine and endpapers retained. Book is good++ with quite bright but marked cloth. Edges rubbed in places. Paper label to spine. Contents good with a number of plates rubbed, creased and with nicks to edges. Light age toning to pages. Names to inner page. A very rare book. More images can be taken upon request. Ref Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
