Large folio (14 by 18 inches), contemporary full red morocco gilt, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, watered silk endpapers and doublures, top edge gilt, uncut. Housed in a custom slipcase. $2500.Limited first edition, number 76 of only 200 copies printed for private circulation, with 52 large folio plates of oil paintings by artists such as Turner, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Constable, Corot, Courbet, Degas, Millet and Manet. Splendidly bound by Riviere & Son.One of the great industrialists of 19th-century Philadelphia, Peter Arrell Brown Widener was also an important philanthropist and art collector. (Later, his son's book collection became the nucleus of Widener Library at Harvard.) Also with works by Beechey, Crome, Hogarth, Hoppner, Lawrence, Morland, Romney, Diaz de la Peña, Dupré, Maris, Troyon, Purvis de Chavannes and Whistler. One of three volumes issued of works from Widener's collections, the others focusing on early Italian and Spanish paintings and early Dutch and German paintings.
