Il Tatuaggio
Napoli: Gennaro M. Priore, 1906. 8vo, 281 [2] pp, printed wraps. Complete with all 15 plates as called for, two of which are roughly hand-colored, each of which reproduces drawings of tattoos, and additional illustrations in the text. Inscribed by the author at first blank. Text in Italian. First edition of this important early study of tattoos and tattooing, written by a doctor and anthropologist who wrote often on criminology and was a follower of Lombroso. The 15 plates, all of which are present here, are beautifully drawn from life and are a rare and evocative record. The final plate is dedicated to tattoos of prostitutes and prints some of the most beautiful and unusual tattoos we've seen recorded from this period. OCLC locates only two holdings at the time of cataloguing. Wraps foxed, worn, and tidemarked along the spine. Professional paper repair to rear wrap and to a tear at final leaf. Good only, but complete and clean within. A fragile publication, and rare in any condition, especially inscribed.
