Houpacky [Swings], nos. 1-6 (all published).
Irkutsk: Litografie Inf.-Osvet. Odboru M. V 1919 - Quartos (30.5 × 25.7 cm). Original pictorial self-wrappers; 4 to 8 pp. each. Richly illustrated, with vignettes and drawings, many full-page and in color. Bound in contemporary stiff card boards; not resized; one leaf stained, else about very good. Complete run of this strikingly illustrated and lithographically produced satirical journal by Czechoslovak Legion soldiers, who fought alongside the White Army in Siberia after WWI and controlled large stretches of the Transsiberian Railroad from 1918–19. The journal was published June–November 1919, after the Legion soldiers had retreated further eastward alongside Kolchak’s army, while transporting the bulk of the Imperial gold reserves for the Whites. In 1920, the Czechoslovak Legion was gradually evacuated by ship from Vladivostok and over 60.000 soldiers returned to the Czechoslovak Republic. Despite the precarious conditions, the Legion issued a daily newspaper using a printing press on board the train, as well as issuing numerous brochures, books, as well as handwritten lithographed bulletins in small print runs. During longer stops, such as during their time in Vladivostok, a printer’s shop was set up outside the train and the operations significantly expanded. Thus, the present journal was printed in color on large leaves of better quality paper stock. Edited by one Jan Rada, who wrote most of the humorous texts, and illustrated by Váca Stepán, whose caricatures make light of the absurd conditions of the Czechs in their Siberian exile, allied commanders such as Maurice Janin, and the Czechoslovak president T. G. Masaryk. KVK, OCLC show complete sets at the British Library and University of Melbourne, and incomplete holdings at Nanterre-BDIC (nos. 5 and 6) and Michigan (nos. 1-5). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
