Archive of original material from Charles Henry Fromuth, American expatriate artist in France
Archive of original material related to Charles Henry Fromuth, 1858-1937, American expatriate artist from Philadelphia. Studied in the 1880s under realist painter and photographer Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Sailed for France in 1889 and remained for life in the coastal town of Concarneau in Brittany. A "painter in pastel," almost exclusively of impressionist boat and harbor scenes. A varied, personal collection of 60+ items. Includes correspondence to his siblings, two original drawings, a signed photograph of his studio in France, family photos, exhibition catalogs, and other material. There are handwritten and signed items from Fromuth with revealing content about his life and distinctive marine art. Other highlights include a rare Vanitas photograph of Fromuth as a young artist and a cyanotype nude from his formative years in the Eakins circle. Items date from about the 1880s to 1930. A rich archive of Charles Fromuth material from an important era in the expatriate art movement. Possibly the largest group of Fromuth items of this type not already in a private or institutional collection. Please inquire for a detailed list of all items and additional images.
