London: Smith, Elder, 1898. Bullen, Frank T. THE CRUISE OF THE "CACHALOT," Round the World after Sperm Whales. Illustrated by A. Twidle [frontispiece still with tissue-guard] and containing the original fold-out map [lacking in many copies]. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1898. Original publisher's deep blue patterned sand-grain cloth with gilt "whale" design. FIRST EDITION. A FINE bright copy of this Victorian whaling classic, with only the minutest wear at the extremities. Printed on the verso of one of the prelims is a short but enthusiastic letter from Kipling (author of CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS) to Bullen which was used as an advertisement to convince readers as to the authenticity of Bullen's writing. John Carter and Michael Sadleir, two of the best-known collectors of Victorian sea stories, joined forces to rank THE CRUISE OF THE "CACHALOT" as one of the greatest Victorian sea tales and Frank T. Bullen as one of the finest Victorian sea-novelists, second only to Frederick Marryat. We have seen many copies of this first edition over the years but one would be hard-pressed to find a nicer example. Wolff 916.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine. Illus. by A. Twidle.
