The Robert S. Huthart Collection of Iwami Netsuke (2 Volumes)
Hong Kong 2000 - First edition. Folio. Hardcover in slipcase. Fine. 2 Volumes, 408 pages, 369 entries, 665 colour plates. This is the first major publication devoted to netsuke produced in and around the remote province of Iwami in the west of Honshu, Japan's main island. Isolated from the major economic and cultural centers of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan, the Iwami netsuke artists developed a unique style of carving, working in unusual materials such as boar's tusk, killer-whale toothe and umimatsu (a form of fossilized coral), and some of the humblest denizens of the natural world around them, including centipedes, cicadas, crabs, frogs, toads and tortoises. Robert S. Huthart's collection of Iwami netsuke, the largest anywhere in the world, includes more than 360 examples and is particularly rich in signed pieces by five most famous Iwami carvers: Tomiharu (the founder of Iwami style), his daughter Bunsho, her nephew Gansui, the independent artist Kanman, and Goho, who was active in the neighboring province of Aki. The catalogue includes at least one color reproduction of each piece alongside a detailed description and information about subject-matter and provenance. Particular care has been taken over the long signatures that are distinguishing feature of Iwami netsuke, especially those by Tomiharu: each is transcribed, transliterated and accurately translated for the very first time. A historical introduction outlines the cultural background of Iwami carving and summarizes the available information about the better-known artists, while a series of indices at the end of the catalogue enables the reader to trace individual netsuke by artist, subject, date and collection.
