Royal-8vo (195 x 120mm). c. pp. 50.000, with 1130 coloured engraved plates (of which 1/3 is printed in colour & 2/3 are handcoloured), 2 engraved portraits & 8 engraved folded maps. Contemporray uniform calf, richly gilt spines with 2 black gilt lettered labels An absolutely complete set of the famous Sonnini-edition in COLOURED STATE. According to the subscription-list only 43 coloured copies were subscribed. The very fine engraved plates are for the formost part coloured by hand; 358 are colour-printed (aquatinta, or coloured à la poupée). Most of the illustrations are after drawings by Barraband, de Sève, and some others. Contents as follows: Théorie de la Terre (3 volumes) - Epoques de la Nature (1 volume) - Mineraux (12 volumes) - Animaux (2 volumes) - L'Homme (3 volumes) - Quadrupèdes (13 volumes) - Singes (2 volumes) - Cétacées (1 volume) - Oiseaux (28 volumes) - Poissons (13 volumes) - Mollusques (6 volumes) - Reptiles (8 volumes) - Insectes & Crustacées (14 volumes) - Plantes (18 volumes) - Tables analytiques et raisonnées des matières et des auteurs (3 volumes). The Sonnini edition of Buffon is the most extensive one published, with numerous contributions of the best scientists of the period. The coloured edition is extremely scarce. The bindings are in the original marbled boards, except for the spines which have slightly posterior paper rebacking, with handwritten labels.//Nissen ZBI, 682 & BBI, 1392.
