Thus Spake Zarathustra A Book for All and None: The Works of Friedrich Nietzsche
Published by H. Henry and Co. Ltd., 93 St. Martin's Lane, London First English Edition 1896. 1896. First English edition hard back binding in publisher's original deep navy buckram covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine and to the front cover, small blind tooled roundels to each corner of the front cover, untrimmed page edges, deep navy end papers. 8vo. 9½'' x 6½''. Contains [xxiii] 488 [8 page publisher's catalogue] printed pages of text. Alexander Tille's English translation was published simultaneously by Henry & Co. in London and Macmillan in New York in 1896 (along with The Case of Wagner in that same year), it was to be the eighth book in a planned complete set of Nietzsche's works in English. The Henry printing was actually done by Nietzsche's German publisher, C. G. Naumann and prepared by Dr. Fritz Koegel in Leipzig, while Macmillan was responsible for getting the American imprint done by the Norwood Press in Norwood, Massachusetts. H. Henry & Co. was unfortunately a new and under financed imprint that was selected by C. G. Naumann and Nietzsche's cousin, Dr. Richard Oehler, over the protests of the English translators. After publishing two titles in 1896, the firm went bankrupt leaving two unpublished works (The Dawn of Day and The Genealogy of Morals) in the hands of the translators. This H. Henry & Co. issue is therefore an exceeding scarce book in the trade, reflecting the very light reported sales of just 257 copies before June 30, 1897. Small neat bookplate inside the front paste down, dusty page edges, light surface rubbing to the boards, text block without any discolouration or foxing. Member of the P.B.F.A.
