Hints to Gentlemen of Landed Property, to which are now first added, supplementary hints . a new edition
J. Dodsley, London 1793 - (8 1/2 x 5 inches). 10 engraved plates (6 folding). Contemporary tree calf, covers bordered in gilt, spine with raised bands in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers (expert repairs at joints) The expanded third edition of Kent's agricultural advice for landowners, including chapters on planting, fertilizer, cattle, timber, buildings and more. "The book strikes what was a rather new note in polemics on estate management. For one thing Kent advises granting equitable leases in order that the soil may become useful to the tenants as well as the landlords. The style of farming he recommends is what might be expected from one who John Donaldson called 'a very enlightened person' nearly a century later" (Fussell). Unusually, the work includes suggestions for the designs of laborers' cottages. First published in 1775, a second edition followed a year later with the present expanded edition in 1793 and a final edition in 1799. Fussell, pp. 101-103. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
