Leaves of Grass (Deathbed Edition)
Philadelphia: David McKay Co, 1892. First THUS. Very Good. First printing of the "Deathbed Edition." BAL's Printing 1, Binding C with faux signature. (Title page is a cancel, dated 1891-'92. Last page of Table of Contents is not a cancel, though; apparently an intermediate variant not mentioned in BAL 21441 or Myerson A2.7.12) 438 pp. Green cloth with gilt spine lettering and top edge. Very Good+ with slightly curved boards, worn tips, rubbing along fore edge of front board, signatures a bit strained here and there. Name written on front paste down with address label and small picture of Whitman glued over previous owner's signature, which is also erased from front flyleaf. Whitman's final arrangement of his masterwork, which is technically not an edition. It was produced from the sheets of McKay's 1888 edition with additional annexes tacked on at the end in a race against the poet's declining health.
