BURMA: Sepia Tone Albumen Photograph of a Burmese Woman Who Leans on a Pulpit.
Burma c. 1880's. An albumen photograph, sepia tone, 13.5 x. 20.5 cm., very good, original old mounting on a card, studio. posed, in a large museum mat ca. 40.5 x 51 cm., clear clean,. unfaded strong image. R A R E. A portrait of a charming young Burmese woman, dressed in her native costume of a long silken and embroidered skirt, with waist band, and an open jacket. Her hair is tightly tied in a chignon behind her head, with three flower-like ornaments stuck in her hair. She wears two heavy silver bracelets and rings on her fingers, with tiny shoes protruding from her skirt. She stands erect, with her left arm supported on some kind of a foreign looking stand, with a foreign chair near by. In her ears, she has very large earings which must be about 2 cm. in diameter, stretching her highly decorated ear lobes. A superb example of a Burmese beauty. One could spec- ulate that she is somehow related to a mission or a mission- ary, since she is clearly standing next to and resting her arm on a pulput, with a foreign-style chair near by. * THE PHOTOGRAPHER: We are unsure as to the exact photographer, but it represents what we believe to be a photograph by a foreign photograher, resembling the work of John Thomson. * Photos of this subject & period are quite R A R E. * Color scan can be sent by email. . *** Color scans of this and most other items are posted to our website.
