Herman Melville, Selected Poems (with Prospectus)
The Arion Press, San Francisco 1995 - No. 154 of 250 (plus an additional 26 copies NFS), with frontispiece portrait of the author engraved by Barry Moser. Herman Melville (1819-1891), although today best remembered for Moby Dick, is considered by many "to be among the greatest American poets of the nineteenth century, ranking him just below Whitman and Dickinson", and this selection shows the variety of his best poetry (N.B., info from book's prospectus). While in many ways this volume was published as a companion piece to the Arion Press publication of Moby Dick, it certainly stands on its own as a remarkable work. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in navy blue cloth with horizontal bands of navy blue leather along the top and bottom edges, these stamped with silver lettering, frontispiece an engraving of Melville by Barry Moser, signed by him in pencil; type Goudy Modern, printed on handmade Barcham Green paper which bears watermarks of the mill, the press, and of a sperm whale, small quarto in size (approximately 9.75" tall), pagination: (i)-xxiv, (1)-130, colophon (131); limited edition of 250 (plus 26 HC), this no. 154.
