Some Chungking Types
Shanghai, Kelly & Walsh, 1941 (first edition). 1 volume in-quarto, 37 pages, hard cover, internally fine. A wonderful set of Doris' sketches in Chungking Province, including The Cooton Yarn Worker, The Peddling Haberdasher, The Comb seller, The Letter Writer and Fortune Teller, the Portable Hat Shop.... A very rare book by Doris Worcester who was an artist, excelling in pastel and water colours. She and her husband were prisoners of the Japanese during the second Word War. She died in 1945 after release from the Japanese concentration camp in Shanghai. A Publishers'note in the second edition of this book ( Hong kong, Vetch & Lee, 1970) indicates that this first edition ( 1941) was printed in Shanghai, but before it could be put on sale, the Japanese seized the International Settlement Of Shanghai and this edition was destroyed. There-fore this edition is very valuable.
