Nuremburg: Homann, Johann Baptist, 1730. unbound. Map. Copper engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 19.25" x 22.5". This detailed town plan of Madrid, Spain by Johann Baptist Homann, depicts the city in incredible detail. Identifies streets, palaces, gardens, rivers, and important landmarks throughout. The most striking feature of this map is perhaps the views. The view on the top right features the Hermitage St. Antonio de la Florida. Four views along the bottom feature the Royal Palace, a scene of a bullfight at Plaze Major, Buen Retiro, and the Royal pleasure gardens. The scale cartouche features a vignette of three figures dressed for the Masquerade gathered around a fountain. The map is in good condition with minor stains along the margins, not affecting the printed area. Centerfold shows some wear with minor verso repair near bottom edge. Minor foxing. Original plate mark visible.

Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a renowned German mapmaker of the late 17th and early 18th century, including being geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. His business was carried on through the 18th century by the Homann Heirs, also prolific and popular mapmakers.
