The front wrapper had the date 1885 with the publishers intending it for the Christmas market, but when it was ready the shops were already full of Christmas stock and the trade wouldn't look at. Therefore it was delayed until January, which allowed the US edition to appear first, by a matter of four days.'In his fiction Stevenson is seen exploring moral ambiguity and duality in human nature; a recurring theme is the contrast and conflict between good and evil.
