(Codices Selecti, Phototypcie Impressi, Vol. XLIII). The Ambraser Heldenbuch, or Ambras Book of Heroes, is a significant work in the tradition of high and late medieval German epic poetry. Included are numerous Middle High German courtly and epic tales, including: the Nibelungenlied (The Song of the Nibelungs), the story of Siegfried the dragon-slayer and his wife's revenge for his murder; Hartmann von Aue's Erec and Iwein, widely considered to be the two founding tales of Arthurian legend in German; and Ulrich von Liechtenstein's Frauenbuch, a 13th century dialogue on the decay of chivalric courtship. Many of the 25 texts contained within the Book of Heroes are not preserved anywhere else. Commissioned by King Maximilian I, the entirety of the manuscript was written out in German cancelleresca script masterfully executed by the calligrapher Hans Ried. The work took him over a decade to complete. In addition to the accomplishment of the text, 118 of the pages are ornamented with painted initials and marginal decorations depicting naturalistic plans and animals as well as human figures.
