Original publisher's brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt, housed in custom brown cloth slipcase with contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Light rubbing and soiling, spine sunned, slight wear to slipcase. Internally clean and crisp but for the occasional spot of light foxing. First edition, with 'Stereotyped at the Boston Stereotype Foundry' to copyright page. With the omission of price in the list of Hawthorne's works, later issues having the price of 88 cents. Date of the publisher's advertisement catalogue reads 'August, 1853'. Tanglewood Tales, by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), a sequel to the The Wonder-Book (Boston, 1852), retells the myths of Greek mythology for children. . First American edition, first issue. 8vo.
