Claud Lovat Fraser
Limited edition; number 294 of 450 copies; original black cloth and dust jacket, top edge gilt, others uncut; 4to. Printed at the Curwen Press. Frontispiece drawing of Fraser by Rutherston and 39 examples of Fraser's work in collotype and line. Signed by both authors to the limitation page. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free end paper 'To, Edward and Prudence Maufe with love from Lovat's parents on August 1923.' The book itself is dedicated to Lovat's Father, Mother, Wife & Daughter. Sir Edward Maufe was a renowned architect best remembered for Guildford Cathedral and the Air Forces Memorial. His wife Prudence was a designer and interior decorator, and later a director of Heals of Tottenham Court Road fame. Loosely inserted is a one page autograph signed letter from Claud Lovat Fraser to his friend Ambrose Heal, the Chairman of Heals. It is interesting to note that Prudence Maufe was an important figure at Heal's, she became Ambrose Heal's lover soon after joining the business. Fraser designed the company's posters at this time and letter relates to some designs he was sending to Heal and asking him for his approval. The letter concludes 'I was put on my metal by the gentleman who said that I had only a limited palette. I have purposely excluded that very palette from these designs, just to prove how clever I am!!!' Also loosely inserted is an original water colour and pen and ink design and manuscript verse, dedicated to Gareth Maufe, dated July 1918. Fraser quotes the first verse of Farewell, Rewards and Fairies byRichard Corbet (1582-1635). The image is of a ruined abbey which is referenced in the second verse of the poem. Also inserted are two art deco style rhyme sheets he drew for Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop and two sheets produced for Flying Fame, which are hand coloured. A lovely little collection. The book is very good clean internally but there is some discolouration to the edges of the boards, the dust jacket is defective.
