A very good copy of the first edition illustrated by the important graphic artist and stage-designer Ivan Bilibin. Oblong-quarto, original chromolithographed wrappers and illustrations inside, colour illustrated throughout with decorated borders and 'old Russian' style script. Neat (later?) cloth spine-strip to wrappers, small chips to wrapper corners but internally excellent. ; Beautifully illustrated with chromolithographs in original wrapper. See Golynets 20 ff. Ivan Bilibin was a leading artist of the Mir Iskusstva movement, gaining reknown with his illustrations of fairy-tales. He was influenced both by the Russian Lubok and Japanese wood-cut illustrations. He was also responsible for the design of Rimsky-Korsakov's Golden Cockerel. Bilibin is, arguably, the best known and most popular Russian illustrator of the time, outside Russia. He died in the seige of Leningrad. ; 4to landscape; 20pp.. pages .
