Venice, Florida:: Stephen Sidelinger,, [1977].. One-of-a-Kind. 9.25 x 12.25"; 29 leaves (26 specimens, table of contents, statement page, protective sheet). Laid in 12.5 x 9.5" leather fold-over bag with lace ties and feather closure. Sidelinger was inspired to create a medicine bundle by the exhibition catalog Sacred Circles: Two Thousand Years of North American Indian Art. The catalog was produced for the North American Showing in 1977 at the Nelson Gallery of Art-Atkins Museum of Fine Arts Kansas City, Missouri. He made a bag with leather and laces then filled it with artistic renderings of items from the exhibition - prayer sticks, potlach coppers, protective charm, amulet, soul catcher and so on. Each image is numbered on back to correspond to the table of contents in the exhibition catalog, which identifies the item in the exhibition by name and function. Stephen Sidelinger: "A Medicine Bundle was a sacred container of various objects used by a Native American Medicine Man or Shaman. A large amount of ritual materials could be packaged in a bundle of small dimensions. The Medicine Bundle contained various items that emanated magical, supernatural sense of power. Used by the Shaman to treat sickness and disease by Spiritual Healing. The mysterious contents of a Medicine Bundle were often kept a close secret. The contents are therefore described only in general terms and their true powers known only by their owner. "A Medicine Bundle was a sacred item to the owner and treated with great respect. For a stranger to even touch it was seen as a sacrilegious act. The Medicine Bundle that belonged to Shamans was buried with them to decay with the body or was passed to a successor. Bundles, however, found their way outside the Native American world when the last bundle keeper disposed of it, or gave it to the world to see.
