The Bible, That Is, The Holy Scriptures Contained in the Old & New Testament
Robert Barker, 1612, Hardcover (Quarter Leather), Book Condition: Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, Early Edition. The Bible, That Is, The Holy Scriptures Contained in the Old & New Testament, including a 34-page genealogy by John Speed. London: Robert Barker, 1612. Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes Collected Into English Meeter, London: Printed for the Companie of Stationers, 1618. Folio, pp. 34 (genealogy), ff. 453, 135, [7], then pp. 100 (psalms) -- occasional misnumbering, but complete. Gray-brown cloth boards quarter-bound in brown calf with brown morocco label on spine, six raised bands, woodcuts, maps. This is a later binding, probably 19th century, with added endpapers and reinforced title page. Leaves measure about 32x20cm with a 3cm lower margin and 1.5-2cm upper and fore margins. Text is double-column, 64 lines, Roman. Provenance: The supplied free front endpaper (loose) preserves a handwritten index of illustrations, and the front pastedown likewise preserves a 1675 gift inscription to John Simon Esq. and also includes the art nouveau medical bookplate of Sir John Simon, the 19th-century pathologist who was Britain's chief medical officer from 1855 to 1876. Sir John here wrote his instructions on how this book was to be disposed of, presumably after his death. A blank page at the start of the Apocrypha shows a holograph list of 17th-century births, surnames illegible to me. Darlow & Moule 241 identifies this version as "a close reprint of the folio edition of 1607." The illustrated title page has no date, but the NT title page is dated 1611 with a colophon date of 1612. (D&M 222, for the 1607 edition, contains a detailed description of the illustrated title page, which exactly matches that shown with this listing.) This is a so-called Breeches Bible for its use of the word "breeches" in Genesis, later changed to "aprons." The 34-page genealogy was created by John Speed, identified here as J.S. Condition of this book: Boards edge-worn and stained, with front joint starting. Front and back hinges cracked. Last leaf of psalms is missing chunks of margin with a couple rips in the text. Scattered staining and foxing inside, nothing unusual except for a small burn hole, about the size of a cigarette tip, that goes through 3 consecutive leaves. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; England; Renaissance 16thc to 17thc; Religion & Theology. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 53281. Early Edition
