Archive of Cordel Literature
[Northwest Brazil]: Various publishers, circa 1960s-2000s. Uniformly near fine in printed wrappers.. Presumed First Editions. 12 mos. Collection of twenty-four literatura de cordel (string literature) chapbooks. Named for the lines of twine they hang on when for sale at marketplaces and street fairs, cordel chapbooks are small, inexpensively produced chapbooks, usually presenting poetry and prose in woodcut decorated wrappers. Of the twenty-four examples in this archive, twenty-two measure approximately 4 1/2 X 6 1/2 inches, the other two measure 6 1/4 X 9 1/2 inches. Five examples are illustrated with woodcuts by the most well known and collected of cordel artists, José Francisco Borges. Another three are by Borges' own favorite artist, the eccentric and religiously obsessed woodcut printer known as "Dilla." His often surreal and violent illustrations portray saints and devils in a sadistic struggle, reminiscent of the North American Christian pamphleteer and outsider artist Jack Chick. Dilla is hardly the only religiously oriented artist; the woodcut by an artist credited only as MA is titled "Football in Hell" and portrays two demons jostling at the sport. Other artists included are José Costa Leite, the more contemporary Abaão Batista. Several of the more recent cordels are devoted to satirical send-ups of American president George W. Bush. Fascinating collection of "folk art" objects engaged with a book arts form that traces its roots directly back to the incunabulum era. Portuguese text throughout.
