Les Échanges Malandreux
Worcester: Metacom Press, 1985. Signed limited first edition, one of 26 lettered copies "not for sale," of Edward Gorey's inspired flip book, in which readers combine characters and captions to create their own "échanges malandreux." The dialogue includes questions such as: "Is he not her second cousin once removed?," "Has anyone looked under the stairs?," and "What is the reason for your intransigence?" Possible rejoinders include: "The mere thought makes me shudder," "I think it will be best to give up the idea," and "We do not have a device for making library paste." The portraits feature a representative cast of Gorey characters: vaguely Edwardian gentlemen and ladies, servants and children, vamps and eccentrics. This copy is one of 26 reserved for the private distribution of the author and publisher, issued simultaneously with five hundred numbered copies. A fine copy of a delightful and unsettling Gorey production. Square booklet, measuring 6.5 by 6.5 inches, original brown pictorial laid paper wrappers, trifold and stitched as issued. Featuring 32 individual full-length portraits, to be mixed and matched with 32 dialogue captions.
