Printed for the Publisher 1834-6, Boston - Abner Kneeland was an American evangelist and theologian who advocated many views, religious and social, which were considered extremely radical for his day. Due to his very public stance on these issues, Kneeland became the last man jailed in the United States for blasphemy. 132, 32, 44 pages plus 4-page publisher's catalogue. Width: 5.25" Height: 8.25". Blind-stamped cloth covers, with stamped gilt lettering on the spine. There is light rubbing and chipping concentrated at the extremities. The binding is solid. The pages show mild age toning and occasional light spotting and foxing, mostly in the margins. Bound as one with this title is "Speech of Abner Kneeland, Delivered before the Supreme Court of the City of Boston, in His Own Defence, on an Indictment for Blasphemy," also published in 1834along with a second speech by him published in 1836.
