The Grapes of Wrath.
New York Viking Press 1939 - First edition, first issue, 8vo., 619pp, publisher's beige cloth with rust brown wrap-around line drawing, titles in same on spine, upper edge dark yellow, very lightly rubbed, minor surface scratches to upper edge of text block, pictorial endpapers, dust jacket with illustration by Elmer Hader, the $2.75 price and "First Edition" intact on front flap corners, with light edge-wear and a few professionally restored chips to edges, otherwise a tight, near-fine example. Set during the Great Depression, the novel focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their home by drought, economic hardship, and changes in financial and agricultural industries. Due to their nearly hopeless situation and in part because they were trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California. Along with thousands of other "Okies", they sought jobs, land, dignity, and a future. Steinbeck was awarded the Pulitzer Price for Literature in 1940 for this novel. Goldstone A12.
