Abbozzo del Mappamondo di F: Mauro Camaldolese Cosmografo Incomparabile alla Meta del Sec. XV. Esistente nella Bilblioteca di S. Michele di Murano.
1780 - Venice, c.1780. 380 x 380mm. An engraved version of the nine-sheet mappa mundi drawn c.1450 by Friar Mauro, a monk of the Camaldolese Monastery of St. Michael on Murano, an island in the Venetian Lagoon. It shows the world in a circle, with north at the bottom of the map, and marks Marco Polo's Japan, China, the Philippines, Sumatra, India and Sri Lanka, Arabia, Africa, with Europe including the British Isles and Scandinavia. In the corners are illustrations of the Prolemaic solar system, the Four Elements, the Garden of Eden and the divisions of the world in the corners. Masuring nearly 2.5 metres square, it is now housed in the Museo Correr in Venice. Engraved versions of these early maps are extremely uncommon.
