Richard Bentley London 1852 - First edition. Large 8vo (24.5 x 15.4 cm). LEAR'S OWN COPY, AND SUBSEQUENTLY AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY, xx, [iv], 284pp., 2 lithographed maps,20 tinted lithographed plates drawn on stone by Lear from his own drawings, printed by Hullmandel & Walton, contemporary light brown polished calf, covers with double-fillet border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, green morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, repeat elaborate overall decoration in gilt in the others, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, small repaired tear to the lower blank margin of the plate facing p6; occasional light surface damage to the leather, an excellent copy. The author's own copy of the first edition. After spending 12 years in the author's library, this book was given by him to Sir Julian Goldsmid and inscribed: "Julian Goldsmid / with the Author's kind regards / & thanks / Edward Lear / 15 Stratford Place. Oxford St / Jany 1. 1864". Goldsmid would have been a influential friend to Lear: a prominent member of a the family of Anglo-Jewish bankers of the same name, he "was for many years in Parliament, and his wealth, ability and influence made him a personage of considerable importance.
