London: Self Published Published in parts between 1871 and 1881. 666 pages, plus 89 listed plates, and one additional un-listed plate for a total of 90. 80 plates are after J. G. Keulemans, nine are after E. Neil, and one after J. Wolf. Between pages 368 and 369 are found two plates, the first being Larus Nuriutus which is unlisted, followed by Larius Ichthyaetus which is listed. A previous booksellers penciled notes on the blank verso of the front free end leaf indicate that this copy was previously owned by Joseph Whitaker (Ornithologist, 1850-1936), with notes on page 536 appearing in his hand. Half leather with buck ram cloth covers. Raised spine bands and gilt stamped lettering. Top edge of text block is gilded. Volume remains solid and tight. Clovers show some rubbing and light wear, mostly along fore edge. Marbled end leaves remain bright and clean. Decorative title page precedes actual title page. Scattered light foxing, most seen on first few leaves. Contents are generally clean and intact, though there is a little light foxing and occasional smudging/darkening and a few small tears. Plates are all very good, but a few do show light foxing spots and smudges. Due to weight and size additional charges will apply for Priority and/or International shipping.. First Edition.
