Viribus Unitis: Das Buch vom Kaiser
Max Herzig, Budapest, Vienna and Leipzig - [1900]. xxiv, 322pp. A deluxe publication in honor of the 50th anniversary in 1898 of the coronation of Austrian Emporer Franz Joseph. With an introduction by Dr. Josef Alexander. The book is presented as a series of chapters from the Emperor¿s life: Youth, Life in Vienna, Life in Budapest, Travels, As Supreme Military Commander, At the Hunt, and In Ischl. Illustrated throughout from autotypes, heliogravures and engravings, most full-page. The majority of the illustrations show gatherings with the Emperor and/or his subjects, and nearly all of these scrupulously identify, either by footnotes or outlined tissue overlays, every person in the picture, thus identifying the entire royal family and literally hundreds of Austrian subjects and foreign guests. Elaborate chromolithographic pictorial title page and two other striking chromolithographed pages by Koloman Moser. A monumental and richly illustrated work. Presented in a magnificent royal binding designed by the famed architect, Josef Hoffmann. Small thick folio (14 by 18 inches) thick, sculpted, morocco-covered boards and morocco-covered spine, plain, with five raised bands. Endpapers with the royal initials on a gilt chromo background. Inset into the front cover is a heavily gilt crown beset with tiny pearls and other gems and two large red panels surrounded by an embossed laurel leaf. Below the crown is a large raised insignia of the Emperor. An elegant blue, red and gilt clasp is at the fore edge. A bronze rope-shaped rule surrounds the above designs. Inner hinges cracked (but sound) due to the extreme weight of the text, else a fine example, obviously prepared for a member of the royal family, perhaps the Emperor himself. Franz Joseph was the longest-reigning rules of the Austrian Empire. It was the assassination of his nephew and designated successor, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, that precipitated events leading to World War I. A spectacular and unique volume. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
