See pictures towards the bottom of this listing.Title: Orlando Furioso DI M. Lodovico Ariosto di Nuovo Ristampato Con Nuova Giunta di Cinque Canti Del Medesimo Autore Non Piu Veduti, Et con le altre cose che nelle altre nostre impressioni si contengono. In Vinegia Appreso Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari, MDXLIX.Translates: The Madness of Roland by M. Ludovico Ariosto Newly Reprinted and Newly Combined wtih Five Poems/Verses by the same author no longer seen, and with other things that our other impressions did not contain.Place, Printer and Date: Venice, Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari, 1549 A handsome 16th-century illustrated edition of Orlando Furioso, the fourth or fifth edition printed by Gabriele Giolito de Ferrari, dedicated to the Dauphin of France. A relatively early example of an illustrated Renaissance literary work. Engraved title page with Giolito's printer's device of a phoenix rising from its ashes on a globe, 56 attractive woodcut in-text vignettes and large ornate capitals, as well as a portrait of Ariosto after Titian in a medallion at the end of the poem, and two states of the printer's device. Added to the work apparently for the first time are five of Ariosto's poems or verses. The end of the work is made up of a vocabulary of obscure words and an explanation of the difficult passages in the work compiled by Lodovico Dolce, with a separate title and not included in the pagination. Giolito published more than twenty books in thirteen years of printing - this is the fourth or fifth edition of this work, appearing previously in 1542, 1543, and 1547. Printed in round Roman type, double column.Binding and Size: Bound vellum with inked titles on the spine, most likely in the 17th-century which partially folds over the right-edge of the text block, a common style of the 17th century. A nice solid octavo, 9"x6" or 23x15cm.Collation: Title page, Dedication (1-2), Orland Furioso Main Text numbered by leaf, 2-264 (3-528), Cinque Canti ("Five Verses"): Title Page dated 1541 but may a misprint , probably should be 1549 (1), 2-31 (3-61). Espositione di Tutti i Vocaboli ("Explanations of All the Vocabulary") title page dated 1549, Sonetto di M. Lodovico ("Sonnet by Mr. Ludovico") with portrait of Ariosto in an oval, Gabriele Gioloti a i Lettori (A Note from Gabriele Gioloti to the Reader, 2 pages), Brieve Dimostramento ("Short Explanations), unpaginated. Expositione di Tutti Vocaboli, Varie et Bellissime Descrittione Dell'Aristo si del Giorno ("Beautiful and Varied Descriptions of the Days by Ariosto"), Tavola ("Table").Condition: A mostly nice solid copy. Very Good to Near Fine pages in a Very Good binding with a couple of shortcomings. The main shortcoming is some fraying to the edge of the engraved title page with very slight loss, only about 1/4" down the lower half of the right-hand edge. Some fraying in the same area to the next few leaves on the bottom half of the right-edge, none coming into contact with the text. By leaf 19, all vestiges of fraying are gone, and the rest of the pages are quite clean and fairly bright. Very little age-toning on a book more than 450 years old. A few marks here and there, to be expected, but NO major tears except for the fraying of the title page. Binding is solid, all pages tight, some wear to to the spine and extremities. Overall a very good+ copy with about 85% of the pages in Near Fine or better condition.NOTE: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT a stock photo.)
