Rennes : P. Hallaudays, 1653 and 1665.. 2 works by Jean Francois bound in one volume, LA SCIENCE DES EAUX a first edition of 1653, and L'ART DES FONTAINES a second edition of 1665. French text, small 4to, approximately 205 x 155 mm, 8 x 6¼ inches. LA SCIENCE DES EAUX: This work is in 6 parts of which we are lacking the sixth part, Des Principes De L'Arithmetique (68 pages), which was on computation and may have been discarded before binding as irrelevant to hydraulic engineering. The 5 parts present are as follows: La Science des Eaux et des Sources Naturelles; L'Art et la Conduite des Eaux et des Fontaines Artificielles; L'Art de Niveler; L'Art de Faire Monter l'Eau; L'Art d'Arpenter toute sorte de surface terrestre. The original 24 pages of Part 2 L'Art de Niveler are lacking and have been replaced by the slightly expanded 32 pages of the second edition, which was published at the end of L'Art des Fontaines, this has been taken by the binder from our copy of L'Art des Fontaines (so the last part is lacking) and bound into La Science des Eaux to complete our defective first work. Woodcut Jesuit device on title page, large woodcut coat of arms on verso title page, repeated on verso *4, 44 woodcuts and diagrams in the text including 1 full page, some historiated and decorated initials, plus typographical ornaments, pages: (16), 88, 97-120; 40; 32; 56; 28, jump in pagination is present in other copies, neat initials on title page, first 2 leaves slightly browned at edges, some pages slightly age browned, pale brown water staining from page 1-65 of first part, showing mainly in the margins, recurring but paler here and there, tiny tear repaired on 1 full page diagram and small tear repaired on 2 top margins. L'ART DES FONTAINES C'est a dire pour trouver, esprouver, assembler, mesurer, distribuer et conduire les sources des les lieux publics et particuliers ... Avec l'art de niveler ... Edition seconde: title page with floral border arched at the top, woodcut pictorial headpiece, some decorated initials and typographical ornaments, 44 wood cut drawings and diagrams in the text, of which 1 full page, pages: (4), 1-120. Some pale brown staining as in first work, light age-browning, some pages browned at edges, a few fore-edge margins trimmed, occasionally just shaving an image. Good copies (6th part of first work missing as noted, the last 32 page section of second work (being the second edition of the 6th part) taken and inserted in first work as described to make text complete). Bound in contemporary speckled calf, rebacked to style, no label or lettering, remains of gilt decoration to board edges, page edges speckled red, original endpapers retained. small repairs to corners, boards scuffed and rubbed, armorial bookplate on front pastedown.
