The drawing at the front of the book is a rare picture of Nekrasov made by I. Mikhailov from a photograph that William Carrick took just days before Nekrasov's death. William Carrick (1827-1878) was an artist and photographer from Edinburgh, Scotland, who spent most of his life in Russia. He had a photographic studio in the center of St Petersburg. He was associated with the finest Russian artists of the time: Zichy, Ge, Kramskoy and Vasnetsov, who hired him to take photographs of their works and to make prints. His son, Valery, became one of the most successful children's writers in pre-revolutionary Russia.
