Pictorial Map of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields.
Gold Producers Committee. Johannesburg. 1924. - Folded color lithographic pictorial map, 8 x 24 inches. The color map depicts, in a central position, the city of Johannesburg. Floating above the city is the text: "Johannesburg, the World's Premier Gold Mining City." In the extended environs surrounding the city 16 or more gold mines are identified. Text blocks connected with each mine provide the number of employees ("Europeans and Natives") and the value of the gold extracted in each of the mines to date. Excellent clean condition. The map depicts pictorially "the tableau exhibited by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines." Text in English and Afrikaans. Text on verso (English and Afrikaans) details unfolding events in a narrative titled: "Twenty-four Hours on a Witwatersrand Gold Mine." This is a highly uncommon pictorial map: there are no WorldCat listings for a map with this date, and just two for the more readily available map of 1932, which is an entirely different production, schematic rather than pictorial. Scarce, and in pristine condition. A valuable addition to libraries with holdings emphasizing the history of South African gold mining. Near fine condition.
