Regulations for the Army of the Confederate States and for the Quartermaster and Pay Departments
New Orleans: Bloomfield and Steel 1861 - Revised edition and likely the first from this publisher. This copy belonged to Lt. Col. Stewart W. Cayce (and is SIGNED by Col. Cayce 12 times) who commanded the 21st Alabama and fought at Shiloh where his name and regiment are inscribed on the Alabama Memorial. The volume has been professionally rebacked in pebbled brown leather (replacing the original perished spine) creating a beautiful outward appearance. The interior is missing the front two endpapers, so an article affixed to the pastedown faces the title page. A small bookseller's label (Wm. E. Mickle, Mobile, Ala.) is pasted on the front endpaper and the same name is stamped underneath the date on the title page. The volume has experienced considerable humidity because the type from many pages is lightly impressed on its facing page. Col. Cayce's signature also imprints on the facing page and occasionally bleeds through to the following page. There is dampstainig on the top area of the last 70 or so leaves extending into the text of the Quartermaster forms at the rear of the book. An ink stain on the fore-edges of the last 35 leaves extends onto the pages and almost touches the text. An article from the Quartermaster General's Office, Richmond, VA, and dated September, 1861 has been glued to the rear endpaper causing offsetting to the previous pages. Additionally, there are other areas of foxing. This book, wonderful in exterior appearance, is filled with interior problems. This book was taken into battle and survived, up to that point, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Quite an uncomomon item. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
