Pride and Prejudice
London : George Allen , 1903 A fair copy of the 3rd issue of the 'Peacock Edition' of Pride and Prejudice with illustrations by Hugh Thomson. In the original green decorative cloth binding with spectacular gilt peacock design to front board and gilt designs to spine. Top page edges gilt. The binding is clean and sound, but the designs are slightly faded; there is a little pulling to the spine; slight scuff to back board and light wear to corners. The original endpapers are present. The fep has a very interesting inscription. This copy was bought in 1904 and at the time, the suffragettes were beginning to turn to direct action to raise awareness of women's right to vote. The inscription, dated Xmas 1904, begins 'To Elizabeth, with nothing of the New Woman about her ..' There is a little splitting of the endpapers at the joints with the book block, and the book is a little shaken, with the stitching visible at some points, but the binding is sound. Contents are generally clean and in good to very good condition. There is some spotting between pp 474-476, and some spotting to the final blank. Please enquire if you would like to see more images.
