MASH (Original screenplay for the 1970 film)
Los Angeles, CA: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1968. First Draft script for the 1970 film. Based on the 1968 novel by Richard Hooker. It's a little difficult to believe the Robert Altman was not the first choice to direct the film, as it became the film that, as much as any of his best work, has come to epitomize a patented style of "controlled chaos" as a means of narrative storytelling. In this case, the "chaos" is a medical camp situated in the middle of the Korean conflict, and rarely has an American film walked the line between comedy and drama with such grace. A film that kick-started a great decade of cinema, and one that still defines it. Winner of a Palme d'Or (1970), and an Academy Award. Blue titled wrappers, noted as FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped production No. 5059.2, dated November 1, 1968. Title page present, undated, noted as First Draft Screenplay, with credits for screenwriter Lardner, Jr. and novelist Hooker. 158 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 156. Mechanically reproduced, with photographically reproduced leaves throughout, on eye-rest green stock. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads. Davenport, pp. 219-221.
